Cayman urged to keep watch on new weather system

(CNS): Residents are being urged by Hazard management Cayman Islands to monitor weather bulletins in connection with an area of cloudiness and thunderstorms associated with a nearly stationary area of low pressure in the south western Caribbean Sea near San Andreas Islands which has a high chance of becoming a tropical cyclone over the next few days. Officials said that past hurricane impacts show damaging cyclones can and do form to the south of Cayman, particularly at this time of year. “Residents should ensure that their disaster kit and disaster plans are up to date and ready, and maintain a high state of preparedness,” a spokesperson for HMCI said Friday evening.

A small craft warning is currently in effect for the Cayman Islands and the five day forecast product issued by the National Weather Service indicates that seas are expected to remain rough, except for on Sunday, when seas should be slight with wave heights of 2 to 3 feet.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season still has almost six weeks to run before it ends on 30 November.
