PNA hope for coalition

| 22/04/2013

cline (258x300)_0.jpg(CNS): Members of the People’s National Alliance are crossing their fingers and hoping they will be part of a coalition on 23 May as they begin their official campaign for re-election. With only five candidates in the political race, Premier Juliana O’Connor Connolly, Deputy Premier Rolston Anglin and Cabinet members Mark Scotland, Dwayne Seymour and Cline Glidden will need to join forces with independents or even their former UDP colleagues if they have any hope of regaining office. So far, however, only the premier has said she would not rule out working with former premier McKeeva Bush in a coalition if the people of Cayman Brac wanted her to serve as a Cabinet minister.

No other members of the PNA have commented yet on how they feel about being part of a new UDP government with Bush at the helm. Given that they supported the motion brought by the opposition and PPM leader Alden McLaughlin that removed the former premier from office, a return to government with him on 23 May would undermine the stand the members of the minority government took following Bush’s arrest and subsequent charge for theft and anti-corruption offences.

Cline Glidden, the least likely to return to a Bush-led government, told CNS Thursday that there were many good independent candidates running in this election. As a result, the PNA, which has used the word Alliance in its name deliberately, will be hoping to form a coalition government with the help of candidates running on the C4C ticket or those that are running on their own platforms. Glidden had intended to leave the political scene at this election and it wasn’t until he joined forces with his PNA colleagues against the former leader that his interest in retaining his West Bay seat was re-ignited.

Getting off to a slow start with the campaign, the members of the minority government will be launching their official bid for political office this week with meetings in Bodden Town on Monday and West Bay on Tuesday. Although no dates have been set for Brac meetings for the PNA, O’Connor-Connolly is campaigning on her own on the island, starting with a rally in Watering Place last Saturday, and is almost certain to be returned. The focus for the new alliance will be on the four men who are facing a much harder battle.

Glidden acknowledged that the situation for him and his West Bay running mate Anglin, as well as his Bodden Town colleagues Mark Scotland and Dwayne Seymour, were much tougher. He explained that, as a result of the PNA’s split from the UDP, their role in the downfall of the UDP administration and the ousting of Cayman’s first premier from office following his arrest last December, the government members have spent the last few weeks engaging in smaller yard meetings, where they could answer direct questions about those events.

“We didn’t feel that we could get up on a formal political platform and start talking about future policies until we had answered voters' questions about the events at the end of last year,” he said. “We felt that was better achieved in smaller settings where people could interact with us, and rather than deliver campaign speeches, we simply let everyone ask questions and we explained why we did and what it all means going forward.”

Since the formation of the PNA, the members have begun distancing themselves from the concept of party, and although both the West Bay candidates and the premier herself were long time party supporters, Rolston Anglin told an audience during last Thursday’s Chamber meeting that the new team, which is not a formally registered party, was formed to move away from party politics, as he said the country is rejecting that system of government.

“The PNA was formed because parties are no longer the answer and as a response to the community's rejection of party politics,” he said, echoing Glidden’s comments about the team being an alliance rather than a political party. He said they would be working with independent candidates to form the next government.

Although holding office and in a position to access the media and the public via the government television channel, the candidates say they are being very careful not to campaign while carrying out their government work. Glidden also said that what may seem like an advantage because of their visibility was also a hindrance.

With no party machinery to take care of their campaign, and each member holding a cabinet post and its related workload, finding time to get on the hustings is not easy. Glidden said that the Cabinet job he and Seymour have held for just a few months may have thrust them further into the limelight but it may also undermine their chances at re-election.

The PNA will be hosting its first major public meeting in Bodden Town by the post office at 7-30pm.

Aaahhh boy… Julianna has spelled it out. The writting is now ON THE WALL!!!

It reads:: As FORENOTICE to the FOOLS of Cayman who cannot understand what WE all have been a part of as the UDP Govt, and therefore STUPID ENOUGH to REELECT us, Then we are effectively saying that we WILL REUNITE with McKeeva and the UDP and will continue running the country into the ground just as we were and at ANY COST/DETRIMENT to the People of the Cayman

I am just flabbergasted and BlabbergUsted with how Rolston has ranted and raved about how he and the other 4 UDPNAs "Did the right thing for Country when they oustedMcKeeva" and how they disassociate themselves from the "wrong-doings" of McKeeva and being "Thrown under the bus" and all that hog-wash.

Has anyone else noticed that an anagram of "PARTIES" is "PIRATES"??

And for good reason methinks. We should be making our Pirates of the Caribbean walk the gang plank…all of them..and we get to keep the loot.

How is it that I keep reading from PPM commenters that anyone who is not on their side is UDP. Boy I tell you, with this attitude we will have no one in the LA working together. It is all about on who side you're on. I think that attitude is what is messing up the country. The LA should be a place with mix views where everybody will come together, listen to each other to make healthy laws for everyone. Stop this party ( and nobody else) foolishness!

Typical C4C nonsense. C4C are basically UDP who found that they could no longer control McKeeva.

Please think Cayman First, and our Islands will prosper.

  6. Not Today BoBo says:

Let’s look at this with clear lenes.

PNA is running two in West Bay, C4C is running two in WB, C4C is running five in GT, PNA was only going to initially run two in BT, C4C was running two until McTaggert bowed out. Then soon after PNA brought in young Christian until he was disqualified. So C4C is now further hedging their bets with Gregg Anderson, thus making a four for this covert marriage of convenience. Now they have Arden and Ezzard on board. Every Tuesday Arden is kissing CG’s backside!! Why?!! If not some sort of agreement has been reached.

C4C from their launch back in November kept saying at every occasion, (video and radio files documents this fact) they will only work with Independents. If this statement was not divisive I don’t know what is! Yet they say Parties are!! Give me an f’n break!

Now we have this covert marriage of convenience of past consultants, supporters and financiers of McKeeva and the UDP with power hungry candidates that really only want leadership roles in Gov’t. Gents and ladies, Cayman is small and your actions are known, so try and not claim otherwise.

I have been listening and waiting for these solutions they claim they have. I hear a whole lot of words, but those words are simply identifying the problems we all know exist and as for the plans they are not original. Sadly most of the Plans are swiped from primarily the Progressive Candidates.

I was waiting for an alternative but it appears the only dog in the game so-to-speak is the PPM. They have been saying all of what all of what all of the new Candidates are now saying all the way back from October 2012. The latest laugh is Charles Clifford swiping the Progressives’ plan for a Growth Management Strategy unveiled by daCosta from West Bay on the Cayman 27 Panel with him and CG.

In my opinion this covert marriage of convenience is disgusting. Misleading the public to believe that you all are ‘Independent’ whilst you operate as a Party by all accounts at the same time bashing the Parties at every opportunity. Hypocrites all of you!

I thought I would never say this, but I respect McKeeva more than the above bunch of C4C and PNA because at the very least everyone knows who or what he is.

My advice, go to every flipping meeting of as much Candidates as possible. Listen, not just hear and make an informed decision.

I agree with you. At least we know who the UDP are and all about. If Jude had us at heart he would have run for the Brac and he would be sure to be elected either first or second. Nobody sees our biggest problem and he was the perfect candidate to do that job.

Mr. Glidden, why would the public listen to a word from you especially after you have lost ALL credibility for your performance over the last 4 years. You have beena dictators puppy dog for more than a decade blindly following his wishes instead of representing the people of this country as you are being paid to do for you work for us the people and not Mr. Bush. You have bungled and mis-managed the cruise port project for 4 years and have shown us that you are NOT a capable business man or politician to be representing the country in anything. Why don't you tell the public about your conflicts of interest with Dart and the truth behind what was really going on with GLF, Diamonds International, Royal and the port Chairman with the cruise port deals. It is strange that you talk about tranparency now but were never transparent in the past 4 years. You are not fooling anyone as you have not distilled confidence in the electorate whatsoever. You and all the PNA have been a disgrace to this country for 4 years and there is no saving any of you so you should start looking for a real job and begin to contribute to our country for a change.

Elio, a you dat? No?  Okay then.  Well, whoever you are, refrain from making unsubstantiated allegations of "deals" and questioning the reputation of others.  Your wild imaginations are getting the better of you.  Prior to CHEC, all negotiations for the port were done openly and transparently.  The only time the process got derailed is when CHEC entered the picture.    But it's okay, we know you have to try anything to distract attention from the dismal failure of the UDP leadership and your former premier's handling of the negotiations.

Does this mean more money for churches? I am sorry but this completely disqualifies this woman from any political office. I am sick and tired of stupid and marginally courrpt politicians that think they can get away with anything. If she makes statements like this, that means her other running mates feel the same way unless they reputiate her statement. One thing I do know is this woman should not have any of the government's credit cards. We can't afford her travel bills at $40,000 a pop.

  17. Just Commentin' says:

Oh Gawd!!  Juju "has said she would not rule out working with former premier McKeeva Bush in a coalition if the people of Cayman Brac wanted her to serve as a Cabinet minister".  In my opinion this means that her departure from the UDP and Bush is a sham!  It means that if Bush needs her to form a government she will simply smile, nod, take his hand and join him, all the while claiming that Brackers (or God, or both) wanted her to do so, whether or not it is true.  Her statement also means that she is apparently aware that the alleged "rift" between her and Bush will be mended merely by way of power-hungry political expedience.

It is so very sad that Cayman Brac cannot field a candidate that can unseat her. (Sorry, but Maxine and David are not my idea of viable candidates.) Why are there no politically savvy Brackers who care enough for their islands to run against this woman?

Her statement also means that she is so out of touchwith her constituents on the Brac that she is not aware of Brackers' feelings on the matter of her aligning with Bush. If she were a total stranger to Cayman Brac she would have some paltry excuse for not knowing, but  as it stands she is without an excuse for being so clueless about so crucial an issue. Will some Brackers here please weigh in on this? Would you want her to align with Bush just to get a seat in Cabinet?

    • Anonymous says:

She has lost my support. She has no shame. She votes to remove Mac from the Premiership so she can get it. She continues to do the same vote buying dirty work that he did. And now she will reunite with him to form the cabinet???????????? What on earth has this woman come to?  I never realized that she was so power hungry that it would make her would sink so low.  Juju XXXX Is gambling not a sin in your church?? No hell, fire and brimstone for stealing and gambling in your christain world? And another thing  why isnt Mac castigating her like he is the rest of the PNA? He is awfully quiet when it comes to her. Wake up people!!!!!!!
