IT administrator wins CS Employee of Year

| 31/08/2013

(CNS) Updated with remarks and official release: Nicholas McLean, a system’s administrator in the Ministry of Education, Employment and Gender Affairs, is government's Employee of the Year, it was announced last night at the inaugural annual awards event for civil servants. Created by Deputy Governor Franz Manderson, the awards are designed to acknowledge public sector workers who go above and beyond the call of duty and encourage others in the service to do the same. McLean was selected from the monthly winners of the award over the last year in recognition of his outstanding contribution and dedication to his job.

McLean was Employee of the Month in December, and Manderson said at the time that his innovative approach to his work was commendable and the young Caymanian had a very bright future in the civil service.

On receiving the award McLean said he was humbled and caught by surprise.

"As a fairly new civil servant I have now been able to get an inside perspective of what goes on and have noticed that there are many civil servants who work hard, putting in long hours, that are also deserving of recognition, " he said. "This award is a collective win for the entire Ministry of Education’s ICT Team, as without their help, along with that of John Gray High School’s Principal, who is also here tonight as a fellow Employee of the Month Awardee, it would be much more difficult to do my job."

He said ICT is now far more heavily integrated in the curriculum than it was in the past.

"I found out I really had my work cut out for me. It is rewarding working at the John Gray High School being able to provide staff and students with necessary ICT equipment and services. I encourage each and every one of the students to make full use of all resources, ICT and otherwise," Mclean added.

Founded last summer, Manderson has described the awards as a way of building a new sense of morale throughout the public service.

“The Deputy Governor’s Awards are designed to recognize the excellent work performed by civil servants in the area of customer service, and towards reaching the goals of their respective departments,” said Manderson, who is currently Acting Governor. “Every day civil servants go about exceeding the expectations of their customers, andit is important that such excellence is recognized.”

Congratulations Nicholas and all the other who were nominated.

As for the comments regarding General Registry, I would like to say that the three ladies that were mentioned are helpful employees but to just name those three is very unfair and hurtful to the rest of the hard working employees there.  I have had similar frustrations at the Registry and when I question why it was kindly explained that the phone system they have is inefficient; meaning that if someone is on the phone with a customer and another call comes in, it rings as if no one is there until it go to voice mail. I suggest that if you cannot reach someone by phone – send an email.  TO THE OTHER HARD WORKING STAFF AT GENERAL REGISTRY – THANK YOU AND KEEP WORKING TO IMPROVE.

Congratulations to Nicholas for his outstanding work. He is good young man and being recognised for his good attributes is well deseved. I hope though that the DG's PR campaign will go beyond the plaques, ceremonies and photos for publicity in the media. That this will mean genuine congratulations, continued encouragement, and an end to the hypocricy and deceit that abounds.

Perhaps the folks at the General Registry can take a page out of this book. A few weeks ago I tried reaching someone at the Registrar in connection with fees in respect of Cayman Companies. I tried to get through for over an hour, but the phone just rang and rang until it cut me off. On the one or two occasions that I did manage to speak to a "warm body", I was put through to someone's voicemail message. I don't want to talk to a freaking machine! You people never return my phone calls anyway! Your customer service sucks! Is everyone at the General Registry on their union mandated coffee break  all at the same time? So, much to my frustration, I called the CI Government's main line and asked to speak to the Registrar General. Surely as the Head she should be able to help me get my questions answered, just to be transferred to her voicemail too. Ugh! By the way, perhaps the General Registry can update its website too. The information contained on various pages of your website is contradictory.

I have always said that the Civil Service has many hard working  employees.    The Civil Service  is no different from the Private Sector where I have worked for over  30 years.  Some are good workers and others are just plain lazy- both Caymanians and Expats.  I don't know Mr. McLean but would also like to congratulations.  Now concerning the Registrar of Companies-  I agree there are many there who do not answer their phones, never return a call and can frustrate you to no end, but I would like to point out three workers who will go beyond the call of duty to assist you.  They are Zeta Bodden, Joy Rankine and Julia Downs.  These three ladies could run that department on their own, and I hope that the Registrar General will consider them next year when the awards are given out.

This was nice of you to talk about something positive and to let people know that there are good workers, not everyone is the same.  It is sad that customer service is lacking when dealing with companies but it's the management it should look bad on that they can't properly train or control their staff but i deal with the public records, patents and trademarks (who happens to be Julia Downs) and the ladies that deal with births death and marriages very often and i can tell you these ladies are spot on.  They are efficient and even if you don't get an aswer when you call them (they do deal with customers during the day) if you send them an email i can guarantee within the hour you will get a reply, it's sad that they have to be thrown into the pot with the bad bunch but i felt the need to give praises where it's due.

Who say that Caymanians cant work?

Business owners angry about having to pay someone more than $4/hour.

    • Anonymous says:

No-one makes such a statement.  Rather many employers express concerns that there is a proportion of the population who have attitude to work that may be lower than their expectations.  What that proportion is is an issue for argument.
