South Sound group presses on in face of blasting
(CNS): The community action group, Protect South Sound, is pressing on with its campaign to preserve the area’s coastline, despite the advancement of a controversial development in the neighbourhood. A spokesperson for the group said that it was still waiting for a date for the first Planning Appeal Tribunal (PAT) hearing. The group said it was ready for the hearing but it was waiting on the PAT to be re-appointed. Meanwhile, blasting has started in South Sound on the inland Adagio Community development and residents are already feeling the blasts, which are expected to happen fortnightly for the next twelve months as the developer creates artificial lakes.
A resident on Bel Air Drive said that when she first heard and felt the horrific noise and shaking, it felt like an earthquake. She was informed by the National Roads Authority that blasting had begun in June and what he described as 'safe' blasts would occur about every two weeks for the next year or so.
“My family and I are concerned how the repercussions are going to affect our environment, our residences and our lives. These continued blastings cannot be safe for any structures as it felt as if my ceiling was going to collapse,” the resident reported.
Meanwhile, in order to raise funds to keep the campaign going, Protect South Sound is joining with Bliss Yoga for a fundraising community yoga event on Sunday morning 4 August at 8:30am on the beach in South Sound by the empty lot halfway between Winter Haven and The Avenue.

Give me abreak! The blasting sounds are less decibels that nearby thunder, and much less than fireworks. I live close across the street from the Westin and every two months there are fireworks for some event at the Ritz. My dog goes crazy when he hears this, but that is about it. Stop trying to portray yourselves as victims. Its a minor and periodic annoyance. Get over it. Its not that big of a deal.
Folks when there's nothing left for Caymanians to develop, dog eat our supper!
Don't worry about property values in the affluent "secluded" South Sound.
They all went south with the "Go East" initiative when the extension and new "highway"
connected the affluent with the impoverished and gave the thugs and gangsters easy and multiple escape routes. The new "DartCo" roads project has created the same problem for the
formerly affluent, secluded, Governor's Harbor. More cameras, curfews, and check points please. Bring back paradise before it is too late.
I note all the Trolls commenting & a lack of supporters blogging to Save South Sound. Well, once Cayman is spolied people might start to think, but I doubt it.
Protect South Sound have not appealed the Adagio Community Development.
However – should a developer be allowed to do such extensive blasting in a residential area in order to get cheap fill to fill A SEPERATE development. He is taking fill off site to fill his seaside lots – at great risk to the homes of dozens of families in the area. That is normally not allowed by Planning practices (taking fill offsite). They are operating a quarry in a residential neighborhood.
Why did they not appeal Agadio?
I am waiting to see the plans to boost the economy that will come from the protect south sound group…
First they did not want the canal – now they prefer the swamp land than a residential development? Even better – they prefer the hum of Yoga…
Ironically their houses are built on land that came from the dredging of South Sound in the 60's and 70's…
Boost the economy by slowly destroying the island??? So very very short sighted…..
These folks did not want the nice development that Mr Hislop first proposed so now they getting Adaggio which I understand is just a pile of homes and apartments…serves them right for being silly in first place
Nice develoment? Did you take the time to go to Planning to check out exactly what Mr Hislop was proposing? I expect not with a comment like that……..for one the proposal included moving a road and taking away Crown property and replacing it with land of a lesser value purely for the benefit of the developer's own pocket. The PSS group are not against development but they are very much against irresponsible unsustainable development. As far as yoga goes, perhaps you should try it sometime………
Sounds very similar to the West Bay Road and Public Beach ordeal!
A community yoga event? Wtf?!
There are community yoga events happening all the time all all over the world for all sorts of causes.
protect south sound.??….more like protect our over inflated property values…….
these south sound nimby's are a disgrace to every expat on this island….
Hilarious! If these Caymanians and expats are to be regarded as a disgrace for protecting what is left of our precious environment from destruction, what do you call the developers? Greedy perhaps?
Try yoga, South Sound, this Sunday morning – 8:30 a.m……….will give you peace of mind and clarity to start your day. And who couldn't use a little peace of mind these days with all the mindless chatter and chaos. See you there, bring just yourself and a friend if you wish, your mat will be waiting for you on the beach that's still there………….
ignorent, ignorent, ignorent
A spelling lesson or two would do you good!
