Call for unity in T&C against UK government

| 23/11/2009

(Turks & Caicos Weekly News): Former Premier Galmo Williams hit out at Governor Gordon Wetherell this week accusing him of setting the country back 50 years. In a fiery press statement the PNP leader called again for a public uprising against the British-led government. He said that Mr Wetherell has yet to inform the country of his plans for moving the country forward or “how he intends to empower TC Islanders.” “I always believed and still do today, that the British Government does not have a plan for this country. “It appears that their main aim is to cripple this country’s economy by stifling development and marginalising Turks and Caicos Islanders.”

Surely what set them back 50 years was the proven substantial cases of institutional corruption that the preceding Governments in T&C either aided and abetted or at best turned a blind eye to? What an idiot.

There was MASSIVE corruption in T&C yet they are asking for unity against the UK simply because they are investigating the corruption. The premier of Cayman is doing the same thing, using fighting words against the FCO & asking for unity against the UK. I wonder why? It all sounds so similar, & the strange thing is that the names of certain persons from Cayman were mentioned (to put it nicely) in the T&C corruption investigation! UUUMMMMM!!!!

I see where you are coming from; the establishment of "checks and balances" or the sharing of powers in government is very important for our upcoming self-determination. A worse case scenario would be that we go Independant and there is nothing to "check" corruption in our government. So every Caymanian must take corruption very seriously.

On the other hand, the UK is using "corruption" for its own ends, and that is to get at the offshore financial industries. The Premier states that he has facts that the UK is out to get us and weaken our economy. There is also an underlying reason for ruining our reputation as well. This is all refered to as a Conspiracy. But does it hold any weight?

Let us keep an open mind and not take sides, especially, the side of the FCO, knowing in history, their abuse of power towards Islanders.
