Burglars take food from meals-on-wheels centre

| 06/10/2011

(CNS): Police have confirmed that a report was made to them this morning, Thursday 6 October, regarding a break-in at the TE McField Youth and Community Center off School House Road in George Town. The centre is where volunteers prepare food for the meals-on-wheels delivery service, which takes food to the elderly and infirm who are house bound. It also prepares some of the meals for young kids who attend the government’s after-school programme in George Town. The report was received around 6:25am after volunteers arrived to find the food for today’s meals gone. Police have not yet confirmed the details of the incident but other sources tell CNS that the foods stuffs were taken during the break-in, which appears to have occurred overnight.

Anyone with with information on this or any other crime can call George Town Police Station on 949 4222 or Crime stoppers 800 TIPS(8477).

I do not in any way condone this behaviour HOWEVER I would like to agree with Anonnymous 10:57 this is very sad. This is a sign of desperation there are people out there who have no food, no lights and water in their homes. They seem to be hungry seeing as there are more instances of food being stolen. I feel sorry for both parties the thief and the victims of theft. People are suffering and no one in government seems to care. From what I can see no one should be surprised if this type of crime continues.

People are using the food in Bodden Town to feed their  Pit Bull Dogs.

I don't believe for one minute that this was done with no further motivation. In my opinion, this was purposely done to piss off the community as much as possible. To me, this is sending a message, that they are not just out to committ the crime, but also slap society in the face along with it.

Absolutely disgusting and this reminds me of a similar theft from the Red Cross some many years ago where stuff destined to help earthquake victims in central america was taken the nite before shipment to those poor folks in need.Hopefully the thieves will be apprehended and their pictures published on the front page of our local papers.

If I could use some bad language I would right now! To steel food from Meals-On-Wheels which is an organization set for feeding the elderly and people in need is just out of this world. Leave the computers and so forth behind and steal the food! I mean come on now!!! Scrunge up some change and go buy a damn cup-a-noodle (which is $0.30) or something if your that hungry!! This just makes me shake my head in disbelief!

Not too sure how this will be played off; but at least they never killed any one.  Obviously, meals on wheels are overlooking some people who are really in need of food.  The majority of people are being fed by meals on wheels are people of means, or they have someone who can provide for them.. The poor robbers were hungry, not that I am condoning what they did, I am trying to get a point across  – that we are trying in the wrong places.  Most on meals on wheel should do social enquiry before feeding all these people who can afford to feed themselves.  It unnecessary money being spent.  I personally have been to people's house and the food are stacked high in their fridge ready to throw away.  Again meals on wheel would not know this, that justt goes to show how people will abuse the system.

A lot of  people who are fed by meals on wheels are people who can provide for themselves.

I too have delivered meals to some of the people assisted by Meals-On-Wheels.  I can tell you that I thank God I'm not in their situation.  I don't know who you have delivered to, but the people that I delivered to could not afford the food and were very grateful for what they were being given.

      • STOP THE EXCESSIVE COOKING says:

Check out the district of Bodden Town.  A big pile of food is cooked up, and PERSONS COOKING IS GETTING PAID GOOD.  But guess what, I see half of the food being left on people tables, for people that are dead, and guess what?  I also see food being stored in refrigerators, by 10 plates at a time.   I see young men picking up this food that is beign left on tables,  and feeding their pit bull dogs.  This is happening every day.  NOW THIS IS WHAT I CALL ROBBERY.

That is truly sad and a sign of desperation.

My God.  What has Cayman come to?  Now even the elderly, indigent and poor are being robbed of food supplies contributed by the charity and generosity of others.   Shocking state of affairs and does not bode well for our international image to have this kind of nonsense going on.

  19. Anonymous says:

Its sad, but it just goes to show that people are starving in Cayman!

    • Anonymous says:

If they were hungry, why would they completely trash the place too?  It is a complete sign of disrespect.  If people are hungry they can appeal to Meals on Wheels just like others do.  There are no excuse for breaking the law and stealing from others.
