Eastern allies won’t help UDP
(CNS): The two independent incumbent candidates in North Side and East End will not work with a United Democratic Party or even support a coalition Cabinet with any members who ran on the UDP platform in this election, the men told CNS Wednesday. Both Ezzard Miller (NS) and Arden McLean (EE) said they were confident of victory and asked electors in the other three constituencies in Grand Cayman not to give a single vote to the UDP. Ezzard Miller said that if the UDP managed to squeeze into government as a result of the split vote in George Town, he believed the UK could impose direct rule and confirmed that he would not support a single UDP candidate to be part of any government.
Miller said he hoped to see a mix of PPM and independent candidates returned across the rest of the islands but if he was forced to choose he would back the PPM, and while he would not serve in a Progressive Cabinet, he would offer his support to that party if necessary to keep the hands of government away from former premier McKeeva Bush. Arden McLean, a former member of the PPM and a close ally of Miller, said he would work with anyone except the UDP and would not support a UDP led coalition.
If McKeeva Bush has the largest group in the LA on 23 May, Miller told CNS that he would not support a single candidate in any position who had run on the platform with the former premier. “I have told all of them that," Miller stated, adding that he would not support Bush in the position of speaker either.
“I am not going to be part of a PPM Cabinet but I would support them to form a government if I was forced to choose,” he stated. Miller said that he did have some philosophical differences with the Progressives and, as a result, he was confident that there would be a balanced mix of candidates returned in the major districts, which would result in a coalition between independent members and the PPM.
Urging everyone not to vote for any UDP candidates in any district, Miller warned what could happen if the UDP were able to gain control of government.
“I believe that should the unthinkable happen and they wind up with enough seats to form a government or be in a bargaining position to do so, the UK would suspend the constitution,” the North Side candidate stated. “The people in all three major districts in Grand Cayman need to consider that when they go to the polls, especially those voting in West Bay.”
Miller said he believed that the political parties would win or lose the election in George Town and he was confident that the people in the capital would have the sense not to vote for anyone on the UDP ticket, as he predicted a split between the PPM and the independent candidates running in the capital.
Miller reminded voters that the UDP leader had been removed from Cabinet twice now, as he referred to Bush’s departure following the First Cayman Bank scandal in the 1990s and his more recent difficulties.
“The leader of the UDP is before the courts facing eleven serious criminal charges,” Miller added. “It is inconceivable that the electorate can support him or any of the people running on his platform as their very appearance on that platform indicates they support him in his bid to regain the position of premier. People simply must not vote UDP.”
McLean echoed the sentiments of his political ally and added that they were both going head to head with candidates who may profess to be independent but who were both supported directly by the UDP. The independent incumbent for East End told CNS that he was confident of victory in his district because he had worked very hard on the ground and the voters there know that not only does he have the experience but he also has integrity.
“I am confident in the voters' judgement to be able to distinguish who is the most credible candidate to be their representative in parliament and who also has the ministerial experience,” he said. He added his support to Miller’s position that a vote by anyone in the larger districts for a UDP candidate was a dangerous thing as he gave his staunch commitment to opposing any efforts by that party to cobble together a government on the morning of 23 May.
“I am not going to be part of making any UDP government. I will work with anybody but I will not work with any candidates who are returned on the United Democratic Party ticket,” he said, pointing to the last four years and the more recent arrest of the former premier.

This is a sensible position by both Ezzard and Arden and something that needed to be said. Voting to put the UDP back in power after the last four years is a vote to continue the same policies and the "anything-goes" leadership style of Mr. Bush that got us nowhere since 2009. These gentlemen should rightly not align themselves with the UDP, which has demonstrated that it works best when it has a bunch of yes men and sycophants who can't think for themselves, much less think and act in the best interest of the country.Surely, if the UDP is returned to power (and God help us all, if that happens!) Ezzard and Arden will need to be in the LA to be the check and balance against all the craziness that they will return to, as surely as spots stay on a leopard.
You cannot just sit there and speculate on what the UK will do. If the UK did not think Cayman could handle electorial Government they would not allow it. You think its just easy to walk in and oust a Government like that, albeit a colonial Government? It has to be dire emergency. UK is a member of the EEC and they have to abide by international rules and protocals.

The world will not end if Mr Bush wins the upcoming election. I have seen conflicts in dependent territories before and I have read about them in history. Britain will not overthrow a colonial government without compelling reasons and those reasons are not interpreted by neither Mr. Miller or Mr.Mclean.

It is times like these that I wonder if our politicians take us for fools.
I am not a UDP supporter, but a government formed via the democratic process cannot be suspended and disbanded by the UK or any other entity.
What would that say about their (supposed) belief in democracy?

After all, when all is said and done, the most crucial question of the upcoming election is: "Who is Dart voting for?"

Dart is voting for a C4C-UDP-PNA coalition. Just look at where all the C4C live and work — Camana Bay. Winston Connolly, Jude Scott (Ernst & Young), James Bergstrom (Ogier), Roy McTaggart (wife works for Dart), not to mention most of them live in Camana Bay.
And look at all the sweet deals UDP-PNA has given Dart.
Who Mr Dart votes for is entirely his choice and absolutely none of our business. If somebody tried sticking their nose in your business you would be the first to tell them to back off. Afford that man and every other one the same respect.

The "Coalition 4 Camana"?
To be fair, if I reside in a district with 4 or 6 votes, and we are going to continue this farse of multiple votes, then I should be able to exercise those votes as I see fit, including voting for one sole candidate 4 or 6 times if I desired to do so. The independent candidates will be hard pressed to gain control unless all district votes are counted the same way. The elections officials and observers should allow voters to exercise all of them in any way they choose for this election. As it stands now, people may vote for one or 2 of their favorites and then may opt to allocate spare votes to their teammates so as "not to waste them". Little wonder that these thousands of "waste votes" amount to the election of bozo party teammates every time. We should want to put a stop to that, in the best interest of this nation.
OMOV is the answer. That's why I'm voting straight PPM. They are the only party that has committed to pass OMOV.
I think people should understand that in the event that the UDP regains power and Mr.. Not sure that is right. Any conviction involving dishonesty, no matter the duration of imprisonment, would be sufficient to disqualify him. Look at Mr Martin. Moreover, I maybe wrong, but I thought the reference to 12 months imprisonment is to the sentencing guidelines, not the sentence i.e. if you could have been sentenced to more than 12 months it counts, even if the judge sentenced you to a lesser period of imprisonment.
First 3 sentences correct, last sentence incorrect. S. 62 of the Constitution says "is serving or has served a sentence of imprisonment exceeding 12 months imposed upon him by any court". It also explains that such a sentence includes suspended sentences.

Did not really need Ezzard or Arden to come out and say this. Anyone who understands how things work will know the main reasons Cayman is not in a Turks and Caicos scenario right now is:
Step 1: Compromised Premier was removed by his own government (without UK intervention)
Step 2: Elections near enough so that the people will be allowed to return a competent, honest government in the current year (again without UK intervention)
Anything short of a Progressives/Independents coalition government, thereby saving the reputation of the Cayman Islands, will result in a Turks and Caicos type intervention which all of these years later is still not fully resolved with the T&C Premier on the run, having to be extradited out of Brazil, etc, etc.
Combine this with the Honorary Consul breach of conduct story from yesterday and who knows what else the UDP/PNA are pulling behind the scenes, Dart trying to save face by pulling out of further NRA negotiations, so that the "Imminent" PWC report "can now be released", UK inteverention is a very REAL consideration for those going to the polls on May 22.

What you say is often true but in this case both politicians have declared their intentions early enough so that their constituents can decide how they feel and where they stand on the position and vote according.
In reality positions change based on events, issues and responsibilities. A good politician will support good legislation, so no matter who forms the government nothing is lost by taking this position. One thing about Mr. Miller and Mr. Mclean, they are not trying to please everybody with wishy-washy statements. They take positions and announce them, so you always know where they stand, even if you don’t agree. It seem to me this is a quality that everyone is advocating for.
Oh, so you favour Julianna's approach that she will work with anyone (including McKeeva's UDP) to get a ministerial seat if that is what her constituents want? Knowing full well that Brackers crave a seat in Cabinet that is as good as saying she will rejoin McKeeva if she can wrangle a cabinet seat for herself. I get the opposite sense. The few UDPers that attendedthe Chamber events had more in common with PNA and less in common with PPM and Independents. In fact, the last term of the UDP is what drove all of these intelligent new candidates to run without party affiliation. Not everything is s conspiracy theory.
Various C4C and independent candidates have come out and publicly said they wont support any party leader as premier which means they will only support one of their own as leader, because if the premier is any member of a party he or she would in effect be the new party leader if they weren't already.
Ezzard and Arden are saying they will help form a Government with anyone except UDP. They have deliberately left open the possibility of teaming up with the PNA candidates.
If we elect a UDP govt, we can expect continued dissarray and uncertainty.
Electing a variety of C4C and independent candidates means no cohesive plan, no clear leader and much back room deal making. The likelihood of a coalition government lasting the full 4 years is next to none under the present system whereby the premier can wake up any morning and replace ministers etc. Independent candidates worked under the old constitution but not now. For that to work we would need to discontinue the new constitution, even Truman would have to admit that.
While i will not be voting any UDP candidates because i do not think they have the credibility to lead, i am also now moving away from C4C and independent candidates as there will be too much uncertainty and i am not sure what i am voting for as they have no manifesto and there is nothing to hold them accountable for really.
The only real choice is to vote for a new PPM government to bring confidence back to government and the country. They have a reputation of being honest and transparent and i believe they are genuine and truly care. Overspending will not be a problem as we are now bound by the new FFR arrangements with the UK. At least with the PPM i know what i am voting for – and at least that transparent.

At least you acknowledged PPM overspent during their term. Sadly, they will do the same again because they have no real solutions or vision for the mess that they largely got us into. For there to be any real change leadership has to change PPM’s argument with the FS at the end of their term was it was their job to spend the money and it was Ken’s job to account for it! Before I vote in George Town, I want a promise NOW from all indpendents that if they are elected on May 22nd they will NOT form a government with any UDP or PNA. How can we trust any Independent who will not come out publicly to say which party they will swing towards if they are elected. We just can’t take that chance . The only people you know FOR SURE that ARE NOT UDP are PPM candidates. All others, except Arden and Ezzard, are suspect of aligning themselves with UDP if they get in.
The problem with just about everything in this country is lack of independent- factual thoughts and talk. The "herd"mentality will always have a stronghold on this community if we continue to allow one person/persons to force their opinions on us (as facts) and we fall for it "hook line and sinker'.

Ezzard stated he would help the UDP form a government just before Election Day 2009. Sometimes I think he just likes opposing whichever government is in power. However, I do commend both these candidates for stating what they will and will not do post election. How about you do the same C$C?

Ummm… your info is a little off there, my friend. Three C4C candidates are not going to be elected in GT (and definitely not Jude) and, whether you like it or not, Alden will be re-elected. Mike Adam will most definitely not be the first elected. Walling is unlikely to beat Ellio. John McLean, Jr. is very far from winning in EE (don't believe the hype of his supporters).

It's not as ridiculous as you think in these circumstances. The UK govt. will not allow McKeeva to be the next premier. If the UDP obtains the majority of seats and McKeeva is elected the only way to prevent that would be to suspend the constitution.
Please let us know where we can locate the communication from the UK that states that they will not allow Mr. Bush to become the next Premier; and that if he does they will suspend the constitution.

listen, I don’t want the udp back in power either but this statement is not only wrong it’s incredibly dangerous. The UK has never suspended a country’s constitution based on fair election results that they disagreed with. And the UK wouldn’t do it either because could you imagine how that would look on them? To suspend a constitution voted on by the people after a fair election where they had their own observers in to officiate? I expected better from Ezzard and Arden. Let’s beat them fair and square and with our honesty and integrity intact.And not belittle ourselves by resorting to the dirty politricks that they tend to use. This is wrong.

The UK HAS suspended a territory's constitution where it elected a corrupt govt. Use your loaf. The UK was so keen to get McKeeva out of office in December it would not dissolve the LA and call early elections because that would have caused him to remain as premier for the 2 months until the early elections could be held.
If the UDP is elected as the majority party with McKeeva as its leader the only way the UK can not appoint him as premier is to suspend the constitution. Ezzard and Arden are on to something.

It is wonderful to know that these gentlemen unequivocally stated that they will not support any UDP led government. In the event of a coalition between independents and PPM, I think the two gentlemen would be good candidates for the Minister of Works(Mr McLean) and Minister of Health (Mr Miller).
Glad they're making it clear they won't support UDP but what concerns me is this thought that a coalition government can work…we had that in 2000 when there were no "parties" and the government fell apart within a year and we tried to go for a coalition government again in 2009 with 2 established parties and we ended up with the UDP. All 4 of my votes are going straight PPM at least I know they won't steal us blind XXXX and neither are they living at Camana Bay and working for Dart like C4C.
Really now This comment is typically ignorant by ppm candidates and its bloggers. When did working hard, being successful and making money to live where you want to or can afford to become a crime or something to be embarrassed about? I thought being successful through hard work and keeping your head down was what most people teach their kids, does it really matter where a candidate lives? How sad that class warfare and color now dominates Cayman politics. I guess it won’t be too long now before we become like Jamaica, Bahamas and Bermuda if that sort of negativity is encouraged or spread by elected leaders.
These people know better that this. Or at least I thought they did! The goal of a coalition government is what gave us the UDP in 2009!
So they are willing to work with PNA….that’s shameful. I heard both of them on Rooster praising CG and Rolston but I never believed that meant that they would work with them. SMH
