Auditor general staying on for three more years
(CNS): Despite the public criticisms and full on attacks from former premier McKeeva Bush, the currrent auditor general has not been put off his work here in the Cayman Islands and has agreed to stick around for a wee while longer. The governor’s office confirmed Friday that Alastair Swarbrick’s contract hasbeen extended for another three years. ayman Islands Governor Duncan Taylor, who awarded Swarbrick a new contract to start next month, said Friday that he had every confidence in the public auditor. “I am delighted that the Auditor General wishes to continue in his role,” said Taylor.
“I believe that over the past three years he has done an excellent job, proving himself to be a robust defender of proper accountability for public finances and providing a clear lead to the staff of the Auditor General’s office. The Auditor General’s role is a critical one in Government and Alastair brings a wealth of experience to it. I have every confidence that he will continue to carry out his duties to a high standard and to add value to the Cayman Islands government operation,” the governor added.

Plenty qualified caymanians out there can do this job as well!!
Wonderful news and couldnt happen to a better person for the job.He is doing what he was brought here to do and Alistair I take my hat off to you sir.Keep up the great work and keep up the pressure on ALL departments of Govt.
The governor renews the AG contract and Alden makes Mac his boss as he reports to the PAC.
Glad to hear the Alastair is staying, but wish Samuel Bulgin was going!!!!!!
News Flash! Bulgin isn't on roll over. Sorry! He's married to a Caymanian so he might be here to stay. Take dat!
He needs to find out what services Jannett Tomaski (former Speaker Lawrence's daughter) provided as "Tampa liaison services" in return for $84,000 – a figure revealed in the Compass today. I travel back and forward to Tampa regularly and have NEVER seen her or heard from her.
Grateful that you're sticking around Alastair. Keep up the good work.
Any natural enemy of the former Premier Bush is a friend of the country.
The audits of Tempura and Cealt were completed by Dan Duguay, published and considered bt the Public Accounts Committee. Where have you been?
at least SOMEBODY who does something worthwhile is sticking around for a while…
While I have no problem with this renewal I wish they would advertise the 'key' posts like the do everything else. One rule and all that. If you're ding a good job, whether you're a secretary or an auditor general you should either not have to worry about your job eing advertised or expect to have the inside track for the required advertisement. Same for promotions from within. Of course, this assumes a fair apraisal process so everyone (employer & employee) know who's doing a good job, or not.
I don't know the man personally, but from what I have read he appears to be a man of integrity and some courage, not afraid to tackle the big issues or political bullies in order to do the right thing on behalf of all who live on Cayman. Keep up the good work and congrats on the new contract.
I cannot believe no one else sees the humor in this.
If this man does the job he is being paid to do, which I have no doubt he will, then he will be sending reports that suggest illegal acts by the Hon. Speaker and the Hon. Leader of the Opposition, to the PAC.
Guess who is the only veteran on the PAC. I do not think that either of the two former Hon. Premiers have anything to worry about as anything that stains one will stain the other and there is no way Mac is going to let that happen , I don’t care how much education Roy has.
I welcome this AG staying on as he will do a good job, I just hope he does not get too frustrated with no action on his reports that really point to wrongdoing by the last government.
Everything else should be smooth sailing.
Whew! For a second I thought you were talking about the Attorney General. When is his contract up?
Contract?? Podna where you been?? He got status in 2003..he ain't goin nowhere…
I wouldn't be too sure about that. If he is enveloped in this scandal involving an investigation by the Met into the Tempura matter he may well have to vacate office.
You mean the same status that he opined was valid and legal in his capacity as AG? That status? Does he not understand conflicts of interest? If I were him I would keep quiet about that. A former Chief Justice has been strongly critical of this.
Yep, that would be the same status grants…and you are right, he could very well be forced to vacate..it remains to be seen..but I think it's all going to come down to a "he said/HE said" situation…
Contract up? Sorry, we are stuck with that one. Remember the Status Grants? Yea ….
Personally, I'm sick and tired of hearing about Operations Tempura and Cealt. I think it's time to lay those two to rest. We all know that things happened but as usual there is never any evidence as it all completely disappears. They say the dog ate the homework but in this case a paper eating monster made them all disappear. End of story.
I know Im going to get a tons of thumbs down and troll hits , but this is how I feel and if you dont like it, maybe your not seeing the bigger picture..so here goes.
This guy is probably the only expat that I see and feel that is doing anything to benefit cayman in the most positive way. Continuing his contract is probably one of the best things that could happen to this country. While he does make a handsome salary, he has brough value for it, while I constantly see and feel there are actually caymanians that can feel some of the other "expat only jobs". You can now go ahead and tell me how this island would be nothing without you and what not. lol roll eye
Thumbs away!
This island would be nothing without us.
Fool yourself. It is because of you why a Caymanian does'nt have a job.
I suspect poor literacy, as exhibited by posts such as yours above, is a far more significant cause.
I refuse to waste time exercising my thumb but that does not negate the fact that "you is obviously a hidjut", notwithstanding the fact that you are correct in praising the Auditor General for doing a fine job – like many other expats and Caymanians.
Yes this gentleman has been doing a good job. But if you haven’t seen plenty of other expats doing positive things for Cayman, then you need to get out more!
I agree he is working hard and worth his salary. He is highly experienced and exceptionally qualified and if we want to attract his stature of talent we have to pay what he would earn elsewhere. I don’t agree with you that he is the only expat working for the betterment of Cayman – there are tons of unsung heros out there who go the extra mile for a country that is not theirs.
Yes, and many Caymanians out there who do the same and others who are waiting to be given a chance to do so.
Good, maybe he can now complete the audits into Operations Tempura and Cealt that were started by Dan Duguay in 2009.
…..as well as dig deeper in the secret deals of the last administration.
we STILL NEED ANSWERS TO THE MAGIC MILLIONthat appeared and then vanished, who sent, it from where, why….?
EXCELLENT NEWS ! An unpopular job being performed by a forthright professional of unquestionable integrity.
Great! Can you please expose the "Brac Paving Gate"?!
